“九一八”后，青年诗人辛白华与朋友梁质夫从东北流亡到了上海，刚刚离婚的施夫人对辛白华很有好感，白华也深受施夫人吸引。白华的二楼住着少女阿凤和她的母亲，她们得到了白华和梁质夫的帮助，不久阿凤的母亲病逝，白华很同情她就把阿凤送到学校读书。梁质夫因受到朋友牵连被捕入狱，白华躲到了施夫人家，被施夫人带到青岛游玩。阿凤加入了歌舞班也来到青岛演出，她演出的《铁蹄下的歌女》仍没有使白华走出安逸生活。梁质夫出狱后北上参加抗战，不幸牺牲，白华听到好友牺牲的消息后毅然离开了温柔乡走上了抗战前线。。An anthropologist from an alien planet provides voice-over commentary for a documentary look at human courtship, mating, and reproduction: "complex, perverse, tragically beautiful: the earthbound human."
